The Federal Government, under President Bola Tinubu, has approved another extension of the Student Loan Application Portal for the 2025/2026 academic session through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).
The extension is aimed at giving more students the opportunity to complete their applications, particularly those in institutions that formally requested additional time.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday by NELFUND’s Director of Strategic Communications, Oseyemi Oluwatuyi.
According to the statement, the decision followed appeals from some tertiary institutions seeking more time to enable their students to finalise their applications.
“The Nigerian Education Loan Fund has approved an extension of its Student Loan Application Portal for institutions that have formally requested additional time for the 2025/2026 academic session,” the statement read.
NELFUND explained that the extension would provide students in the affected institutions with another opportunity to complete their application process through the official portal.
Speaking on the development, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NELFUND, Akintunde Sawyerr, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to ensuring that eligible Nigerian students benefit from the scheme.
He noted that the programme was designed to remove financial barriers that often prevent many students from accessing higher education.
“NELFUND remains committed to ensuring that eligible students across participating institutions have the opportunity to access the student loan programme,” Sawyerr said.
The Fund also urged students in institutions benefiting from the extension to make use of the additional window to submit their applications.
NELFUND emphasised that all applications must be completed through the official portal to ensure proper processing and verification, while also reiterating its commitment to transparency and accountability in administering the scheme.
The student loan initiative is part of the Federal Government’s efforts to expand access to higher education, particularly for students from low-income families.
The scheme is administered by NELFUND following legislation signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in April 2024.
It provides interest-free loans to students in public tertiary institutions across Nigeria to help cover tuition fees and other education-related expenses.
Under the framework of the programme, beneficiaries are expected to begin repayment only after completing their studies and securing employment.
